icon Detailed Information

Niagara Helicopters Limited is located a short 5 minute drive from Niagara Falls or hop onto the Niagara Parks People Mover bus.  Free car and motorcoach parking available on-site.

In the forty-five years since Niagara Helicopters Limited started business in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, the corporation has undergone many changes including a change of location, several changes of name, as well as changes in ownership.  But the one thing that is constant is that this attraction has been thrilling visitors from all over the world.

Originally located near what is know as Highway 420 in Niagara Falls, Niagara Helicopters moved to it’s present six acre site in 1964.  At that time, the site was used primarily as a pilot training facility.  Sightseeing and charter flights were not the company’s main objective.  Throughout the 60’s and the 70’s, the firm trained a large proportion of all Canadian Helicopter Pilots.

In 1978, the company was bought by Pan-Air Helicopters based in Ottawa, Ontario.  Subsequently, all training operations were transferred to their Ottawa branch.  Sightseeing tours became the principal focus of the Niagara Falls base of operations.

In early 1985, the Niagara Falls portion of Pan-Air was purchased by Niagara Helicopters Limited.  Ruedi Hafen (Swiss born), the new Company President, began this venture with just one, 4-seat, Bell 206 Jetranger.  Later that spring, a second Jetranger was added to the fleet, and the following summer, a 6-seat, Bell 206 Longranger was purchased.

In 1988, the influx of business warranted the acquisition of machinery with a higher capacity.  That season, a Texas-Manufactured Bell 412 Helicopter flew over Niagara Falls before being leased to an operator in the Gulf of Mexico.  In 1990 a second 14-seat Helicopter and the first Bell 412 built by Bell Helicopter-Textron in Quebec, Canada for a Canadian customer, was added to the fleet.

Over the past 10 years, Niagara Helicopters has invested a great deal of both time and money to upgrade and maintain a helicopter fleet, which is at the cutting edge of technology.  Another highlight of our fleet in 1994, was the first commercial delivery of a Bell 206 Twin Ranger to Niagara Helicopters Limited.  This aircraft was also the 1000th helicopter built by Bell Helicopters-Textron in Quebec, Canada.  In 1996, the entire fleet was replaced with the newest helicopter model manufactured by Bell Helicopters in Montreal, Canada.  The Bell 407 Helicopter is ideal for sightseeing operations it’s larger cabin space provides for a more comfortable flight, the large panoramic windows provide a better view for all 6 passengers and it’s 4-bladed main rotor system, with Quiet Cruise capability, makes it one of the quietest helicopters in its class.

Today’s Niagara Helicopters is almost exclusively a sightseeing operation, augmented by charter flights, aerial surveillance, film and photography, external loads, and other specialty flying.  In addition, the company has been awarded several community service awards for providing helicopter assistance in search and rescue operations conducted by local police and firefighters.  In 1999, Niagara Helicopters was awarded the highest honour for excellence in aircraft maintenance by Transport Canada, for the Ontario Region.

In it’s busiest months the company employs about 40 people, including 14 full- and part-time Pilots and 5 Aircraft Maintenance Engineers.  Last year the company flew over 100,000 passengers from all corners of the globe, on the regular 9 minute, 27 kilometre flightseeing tour over Niagara Falls.
